My name is Catherine (Cat) Skinner

I'm a reflective writing and story coach, an indie author, a secular minister and a mom. I've also been an actor, an event planner, a burlesque madame and an advocate for unconventional family structures. The common thread woven through all these experiences is a love of words, the ability to nurture, and a talent for creating safe space through journal therapy.

One of the only journal therapists in Canada, I'm certified in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Grief Counselling and Divine Feminine Mythology.  I'm constantly expanding my knowledge base to better serve clients in journal therapy workshops and private sessions.

I help my clients make powerful connections between the written word and their unique inner landscape. Each journal therapy workshop and session is a safe space where we bridge the gap between the mundane and the sacred, drawing on archetype and our collective consciousness to offer both intuitive and practical healing tools.

Writing, Creativity & Therapeutic Journaling Has Always Been An Outlet

At the age of eight, I got my first journal and took to putting feelings on paper like an ugly duckling to water. My writing became the place where I could share my secrets and explore the inner workings of my huge imagination.

Little me.

Little me.

As a teen I discovered a love of theatre that helped me tell stories in a whole new way. For years I thought this was the path I would tread, and the skills I learned in theatre school have served me over and over again.

My foray into professional theatre happened in tandem with a brief career in event planning and I combined these skills to form a cabaret burlesque theatre company.

I was the Artistic Director and Mistress of Ceremonies for these adult theatre experiences. It was up to me to create a safe container for both performer and audience alike to explore sensuality and check their inhibitions at the door.

Along the way, I became an accidental blogger. My personal blog started as a travel journal and evolved into an exploration of my experience as a woman, an incurable romantic, a seeker and a parent.

The writing connected me to the realization of how much power we have in shaping our personal stories.

I entered into motherhood in a rather unconventional way and this unique experience of relationship brought me to my own experience in therapy. As I discovered how understanding self and challenging our beliefs can shape our lives, I also discovered my call to healing.

My story continued to evolve and so did my experience with writing and holding sacred space.

The burlesque days wound to a close and I dove deeper into writing. I launched Your Beta Reader, a professional manuscript critique service for authors. This is where I first began to help people shape their stories.

In 2016 I became a secular minister and continue to work closely with couples and families. I also officiate life celebrations for people from all beliefs; baby naming ceremonies, weddings, funerals, and any other passages that can be marked by ritual and ceremony.

In May of 2019 I returned to school to become a psychotherapist. Around that time, a psychic told me that I was going to need a piece of paper to do what I had always done. At first, I thought she meant a degree, but it wasn't long before I realized that what I was meant to do was connect other people to the practice of therapeutic writing.

And so, The Sacred Pen was born.

Writing is the key to our highest truth and my work is to guide my clients as they connect, unpack, and re-write the stories of their lives.
